Why Placeholder Text on a Live Page Instantly Loses Visitors

Nothing tells a first-time visitor 'this isn't ready yet' faster than obviously unfinished filler text.

What it is

This check covers the same leftover placeholder or filler text addressed from a broader credibility angle elsewhere, but focused specifically here on the immediate, gut-level reaction of a first-time visitor encountering it β€” text like "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet...", "Coming soon", or "[Add description here]" still visibly present on a page that's actually live and being shown to real visitors.

Where the trust-focused version of this issue is about longer-term credibility and due diligence, this angle is about the split-second, almost reflexive reaction: a visitor immediately registering that something looks wrong, before they've consciously thought about why.

Why it matters

A first-time visitor doesn't need to know what "Lorem ipsum" specifically means to register, instantly, that something about the page looks unfinished or broken the moment they see it β€” it reads as visually wrong even without understanding exactly why. That instant reaction is often enough on its own to make someone leave immediately, well before they'd otherwise have given the rest of the page, however good it might be, any real chance.

This is one of the most avoidable problems on this entire list, precisely because fixing it requires no new skill or design work β€” only remembering to go back and replace text that was only ever meant to be temporary in the first place.

How to fix it

  1. Read through every live, publicly visible page looking specifically for text that was clearly only ever meant as a placeholder.
  2. Pay particular attention to sections that are easy to forget during a launch β€” a testimonials block, a newly added page, or anything copied from a template and not fully finished.
  3. Replace every instance with real, final content before sending any visitor to that page.
  4. If a section genuinely isn't ready yet, consider removing it from the live page entirely rather than leaving a visible "coming soon" placeholder in its place.
  5. Do one final full read-through immediately before or right after launch specifically looking for this, since it's easy to miss during earlier, more design-focused reviews.
